The impact of a motor vehicle accident can extend far beyond physical injuries. You may find yourself experiencing anxiety, emotional overwhelm, changes in mood, difficulty sleeping, or a loss of confidence in situations that once felt familiar.

For some, returning to driving or travelling as a passenger can become stressful. Others may experience persistent pain, fatigue, difficulty concentrating, or challenges adjusting to changes in their daily lives.

These experiences can affect your sense of safety, independence, relationships, and overall well-being.

At Embodied Path Therapy, I provide compassionate, trauma-informed counselling to help you understand and navigate the emotional and psychological impact of an accident, develop practical coping strategies, and work toward recovery at a pace that respects your individual needs.

ICBC Counselling

Supporting Your Emotional Well-Being After a Motor Vehicle Accident

Everyone experiences and responds to an accident differently. Some emotional reactions appear immediately, while others may become more noticeable over time.

Counselling may help you navigate:

Anxiety, Fear & Panic
Managing increased worry, fear, panic symptoms, and feelings of being unsafe following an accident.

Driving & Passenger Anxiety
Gradually rebuilding confidence when driving, travelling as a passenger, or encountering accident-related reminders.

Trauma & Stress Responses
Understanding and managing intrusive memories, nightmares, hypervigilance, avoidance, and heightened startle responses.

Depression & Emotional Changes
Exploring sadness, irritability, frustration, emotional numbness, or a reduced interest in previously enjoyed activities.

Chronic Pain & Emotional Well-Being
Developing coping strategies for the emotional impact of ongoing pain, physical discomfort, and changes in daily functioning.

Sleep Disturbances & Fatigue
Exploring strategies to manage stress-related sleep difficulties and support healthier rest routines.

Concussion-Related Adjustment
Supporting emotional well-being while navigating changes in concentration, memory, energy, and tolerance for everyday activities.

Adjustment & Loss of Independence
Processing changes in routines, work, relationships, identity, and confidence following an accident.

You do not need to be experiencing all of these concerns to benefit from counselling. Support is tailored to your individual experiences and recovery goals.

How ICBC Counselling Can Help

Recovery is not always a straightforward process. Some days may feel manageable, while others bring unexpected emotional or physical challenges.

My approach recognizes the connection between thoughts, emotions, physical sensations, and nervous system responses.

Depending on your needs, counselling may include:

  • Psychoeducation: Understanding common emotional and physiological responses to trauma, stress, and injury.

  • Emotional Regulation: Developing strategies to manage anxiety, overwhelm, irritability, and distress.

  • Grounding & Mindfulness: Learning techniques that support present-moment awareness and a greater sense of stability.

  • Cognitive Strategies: Exploring unhelpful thought patterns and developing more balanced ways of responding to challenges.

  • Somatic-Informed Practices: Building awareness of physical stress responses and using gentle body-based regulation strategies.

  • Gradual Confidence Building: Supporting a manageable, step-by-step return to driving or other avoided activities when appropriate.

  • Pain Management & Pacing: Developing practical strategies to navigate the emotional impact of persistent pain, fatigue, and changes in functioning.

I draw from evidence-informed approaches, including CBT, ACT, DBT-informed strategies, mindfulness, and somatic-informed practices.

Together, we'll identify meaningful goals and adapt our work to your needs, comfort, and progress.

My Approach to ICBC Counselling

Trauma-Informed, Personalized & Collaborative

1. Understanding Your Experiences

Our initial sessions focus on understanding how the accident has affected your emotional well-being, daily functioning, relationships, and sense of safety.

We'll explore your concerns and identify what feels most important to address.

2. Developing Practical Coping Strategies

Together, we'll explore tools and approaches to support emotional regulation, reduce distress, strengthen coping skills, and navigate accident-related challenges.

Strategies are introduced collaboratively and adjusted according to your needs.

3. Supporting Your Recovery

As counselling progresses, we'll reflect on changes, recognize improvements, and adapt your goals as needed.

Recovery looks different for everyone, and counselling is guided by your individual circumstances rather than a fixed timeline.
